THE HOUSE OF THE LORD

"I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD."
Psalm 122:1

What is it about the "house of the Lord" that we desire to go there? Are we constrained by His love to bow and worship Him?

David said, "One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple" (Psalm 27:4). It was in the "house of the Lord" that David's heart was warmed by His presence as in no other place. He was made aware of God's virtues of love, grace and mercy. It was there he could bare his heart before the Lord and gaze upon "the beauty of the Lord" in forgiveness and reconciliation. He sought to meditate on the goodness of the Lord. He reflected upon how God had time and again been his strength, his refuge, his rock and his Almighty God. As he would draw near to God, God would draw near to him. These intimate encounters were to him like drinking from the eternal springs of God. "The house of the Lord" was refreshing to his soul and the delight of his heart.

How should we prepare ourselves before we go into the house of the Lord? If we are to worship the Lord, we need to have our hearts cleansed and purified by the Holy Spirit. There should be nothing to hinder our response to worship Him in spirit and in truth. How needful it is for us to respond to David's admonition, "Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). We need to pray for a quiet receptive and responsive spirit and ask the Lord to speak to our hearts as we bow in awe of all He is.

It is in the "house of the Lord" that the Holy Spirit will bring us into a unity with the saints and a oneness of heart, mind and purpose. We will gain in our knowledge of the truth and the Son of God, our Savior and Lord. The Holy Spirit will seek to bring us into an intimate personal relationship with Jesus Christ and challenge us to grow in grace, to become like Christ and be clothed with His virtues as He invades our hearts.

In the "house of the Lord" we will learn to speak the truth in love and bear one another's burdens. Gathered together with others of like precious faith we will stand in holy reverence and awe, beholding the Lamb that was slain for us on Calvary. It is where we meet God in union with other believers and in one accord unite in worship, praise, and thanksgiving. When the Holy Spirit encompasses our hearts, His presence is glorious and we respond in a humble and holy relationship to Him.

Is it any wonder that David, when he was continually pursued by Saul, longed to be in the house of the Lord? It was there his heart was refreshed and renewed, lifted up in glorious praise unto the Lord of his life. To David, the "house of the Lord" was very dear to his heart, because it was there he had his most intimate sessions with God. His words of ceaseless praise in Psalm 103 are the expressions of thanksgiving that arose from his heart when in the house of the Lord. "Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name."

So should be the overflow of our hearts when we enter into "the house of the Lord." Even the response of the seraphim cried out, "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory" (Isaiah 6:3). May we bow in contrition, in humility of heart, in adoration, praise, and thanksgiving of the Lamb of God that was slain for our sins. We are in the presence of God Almighty...we worship, love and adore You, O God!
