"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty." Psalm 91:1
Tragedies are "wake-up calls" to all of us. The Twin Towers tragedy brought a rude awakening across the world. Our lives were deeply touched by the unnecessary deaths of so many people. Many were brought to the startling reality that we have no promise of tomorrow. We have only this moment! Life is uncertain at best. We cannot say for sure we will live through this day. Eternity is forever. We take these things for granted until we are personally touched by some tragedy. Are we ready to face the One who has given us life, who provided redemption for the awful way we messed up life, and who will judge us, whether we received Him as our Savior or rejected Him who forgave our sins? Certainly, this question is foremost and should be dealt with before any other consideration.
Ask yourself, "How can I live my life more effectively, not squandering precious time, but making every day a meaningful experience, a blessing and a contribution to others?"
The very foundation of living more effectively for His glory is faith. In Hebrews 11, you find men and women of God who exercised unreserved faith in an all-sufficient God. These were not extraordinary people who had great faith. They were just like you and me. We don't have faith in measures--little faith, more faith, or great faith. We either have faith or we don't have faith. It's not the measure of our faith, but IN WHOM we place our faith. If I were in a precarious situation, holding on for dear life on the edge of a cliff with nothing below but hundreds of feet of space, and someone let down a string to pull me up to safety, I would not have any faith in that string to hold me. I could have all the faith in the world, but that string would not do the job. However, if a strong nylon rope with a harness was let down, I would place my faith in the strong rope. Our focus is not on how much faith we have, but on the SUFFICIENCY OF THE OBJECT OF OUR FAITH.
In today's uncertain times, we need a faith that is steadfast, sure, and anchored to the Rock of Ages, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Whatever the future holds for us as believers in an awesome God, I trust you can say with David, "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. Surely He will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror by night nor the arrow that flies by day." David directs the focus of his faith in the greatness of God. Under all circumstances, in all situations, with perfect confidence and unreserved trust, this is the privilege of every believer...to abide under the shadow of the Almighty. "Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him, with long life will I satisfy him."
