"He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Psalm 91:1
This psalm has particular meaning to me. I have read these verses many times and have been comforted and reassured of His presence. During my days on the front lines in Germany in World War II, as a machine gunner with the 1st Division, I experienced what it meant to "abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Shrapnel from a German artillery shell almost blew off my two forearms and right leg, critically wounding me. At midnight, lying across the hood of a jeep that carried me back to the first-aid tent just behind our lines, I found a blessed refuge and fortress in Him. Sensing that I would not make it, I received blessed peace and a "song in the night" from God and I started singing, "Only trust Him, He will save you, He will save you now." I was going to sing my way right into the presence of the Lord. God can give us a song in the night when there's no song to sing. "For He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." He is ever faithful!
This is the great privilege of every believer, to dwell [abide] in the secret place of the Most High [in the presence of the Lord]. To have access to God [at the Throne of Grace], going there continually, habitually dwelling in the consciousness of His presence. This is the secret place that is known only by the believer, a privilege only to the believer, for us to abide in [rest in, be protected by, be strengthened by] the shadow of the Almighty. Can anything be more blessed than to have fellowship and to commune with the Father? Our communion with God is such that no language can convey. In the presence of God! To me, to have such a privilege in inconceivable; it is beyond my understanding, but HOW BLESSED! This is not like it was with the High Priest in the days of the Tabernacle, who was the only one permitted to enter into the "Most Holy Place," and only once a year. ALL BELIEVERS are privileged to have ACCESS INTO HIS VERY PRESENCE, anytime, anywhere! Christ has broken down the middle wall or partition that separated our access to God prior to Calvary. Has this tremendous truth ever impacted you? It will radically change your life!
To be "under the shadow of the Almighty" and to "dwell in the secret of His presence" is to know that He is my refuge from every trouble, and my fortress from every assailant. His truth and faithfulness are my shield and buckler. He is my God whose powers shall be manifested for me. In Him, I will trust only and exclusively, under all circumstances, with perfect confidence and steadfast trust.
"Because he has set his love upon me, I will deliver him. I will set him on high. He shall call upon me and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him. I will show him my salvation" (Psalm 91:14-16). This is God's covenant with the believer. What a blessed experience it is to see the promises in His covenant become a living reality as we dare to believe. Have you entered into your portion of this glorious covenant by appropriating His promises and claiming your possessions? By faith, claim all that God has provided!
