Lord Open His Eyes That He May See

"And Elisha prayed, O LORD open his eyes that he may see. Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha." 2 Kings 6:17

How typical this scene is of our daily walk. The Syrian army had surrounded the city with its great armed forces, waiting for the command to go forward and engage the Israelites. Elisha's servant arises early in the morning and sees the vast army arrayed against them, and cries out to Elisha in fear, "My lord, what shall we do?"

The frightened servant saw nothing but the invading army, but Elisha saw the invisible hosts of angels engaged in his defense. The servant saw only with the eyes of the flesh, and was filled with terror. Elisha saw with the eyes of faith, and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire. Frustrated and filled with fear, the servant was beside himself. Elisha was composed and perfectly at peace, as if no enemy was there. And what did Elisha do? He lifted up his heart to God and said, "O Lord, open his eyes that he may see." See what? See the might and sovereignty of God in every situation!

The language of the heart that is guided by the "eye of faith" says, "Don't be afraid; those who are with us are more than those who are with them." From within the city, surrounded by the overwhelming forces of the enemy, Elisha was assured, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" He could turn to his servant and say, "Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?"

Such undaunted faith and trust in God are described in innumerable instances in God's Word. Do you recall when Moses and the children of Israel were surrounded by the mountains and pursued by the Egyptians, he called upon God and the sea parted before them? When the people of Israel were overwhelmed by the Philistines and the blaspheming remarks of Goliath, and they crouched in fear, God had David, who DARED TO BELIEVE in a mighty God to destroy the idolatrous foe. When Hezekiah, being attacked by 185,000 Assyrian forces, cried out to the Lord, and at dawn Hezekiah looked, and the angel of the Lord had smitten them, and they were all dead...185,000 enemy soldiers.

Is it any different today? Many say, Oh, that was back in biblical days; those people were different from us. God doesn't work that way today." Let me tell you, "He is the same yesterday, today, and forever!" The people in Hezekiah's day were no different than we are today. God is still the mighty God and is doing miraculous things TODAY. We need not have great faith, but simply FAITH IN A MIGHTY GOD! How great is "your" God? It is our privilege to exercise faith in the greatness of God. Such faith will give undeniable evidence that we "know in whom we have believed, that he is able to keep that which we have committed unto him." We rest in steadfast confidence that we shall be "more than conquerors through him that loved us." With a heart of faith and persevering trust in the might and power of God, nothing is impossible to him that believes. Let me ask you again...how great is your God? Launch out into the uncharted waters by faith; trust God for the impossible, and DARE TO TRUST!
