"He turned the sea into dry land: they went through the flood on foot: there did we rejoice in Him."
Psalm 66:6
Throughout Scripture God intervenes, leads, protects, provides, and shows His care and concern for His own. The children of Israel graphically illustrate this as God dealt with them. His desire was that they would be a people that would glorify His name and be a radiant testimony to Him. He made a covenant with them that was simple yet profound. If they would obey His commandments and walk in His ways He would be their God and bless them immeasurably.
How miraculous was their deliverance when they were "boxed in" at the Red Sea: Pharaoh's hosts pursued them from behind, the Red Sea was before them. What did Moses say to these unbelieving, complaining Israelites? "Fear ye not, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will show to you today: for the Egyptians you have seen today, you will see them no more for ever" (Exodus 14:13).
Often when we are in such a predicament, we need to heed the same words from Moses. From frustration, fear and stress, we need to turn from the false security of our way and place unwavering faith and unrelenting trust in our Almighty God. If we have been learning to trust God, the crises we face will reveal that we are willing to go to the breaking point and not turn our confidence from Him, but quietly wait for His gracious interceding.
In God's time He told Moses to tell the people to "go forward." To allow the time necessary for these two million plus Israelites to go through the Red Sea on "dry" ground, the angel of God removed the pillar of the cloud from before them "And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel, and it was a cloud of darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one camp came not near the other" (Exodus 14:19-20). There is a time to wait that our faith may be steadfast and sure, but then there is the time to go forward in confident faith and see God do what we cannot do, and bring glory to His name.
Israel did this under the leadership of Moses. They dared to believe and God parted the waters, destroyed the enemy and brought about a great deliverance and victory. This experience can be repeated time and again in our lives if we get our eyes off the circumstances, focus them upon Christ and move forward boldly trusting in God.
"...There did they rejoice in Him." There on the banks of the Red Sea they rejoiced greatly in what God had done. Their victory came because they trusted God in the crisis. How much greater our lives are enriched, our faith strengthened and our union with the Lord strengthened when we go through the crises with Him, rather than being delivered from the crises by Him.
"Israel saw the great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians, and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD and served his servant Moses" (Exodus 14:31). Look at their response..."they sang...I will sing unto the Lord, for He hath triumphed gloriously" (Exodus 15:1).
Whatever the crises we encounter, God wants us to trust Him without reservation. "Be still and know that I am God." Then in faith go forward, knowing "Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4). Then we can say as they, "There did we rejoice in Him." Wherever "there" may be in our life, it is an occasion to see the mighty works of the Lord in putting down the enemy and to see God triumph gloriously. May this be true in each of our lives. Dare to believe!
