At the Crossroads

"And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left." Luke 23:33

Only eternity will reveal the magnitude of the death of Jesus on the cross of Calvary. This was the ultimate manifestation of God's love to man. He sent His only begotten Son to pay the enormity of sin's debt. Jesus shed His blood and gave His life on Calvary's cross to redeem man who was separated from God because of sin. The depth of our sin can only be measured by the greatness of His infinite grace, which is greater than all our sin. If we could comprehend His pure holiness, only then could we grasp the utter heinousness of our sin. Nothing was "worthy or acceptable" to God to redeem us but the life and blood Jesus offered on Calvary's cross. There is no other reason He came.

Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life." Paul writes, "For he [God] hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteous of God in him." At Calvary we see the "infinite love of God" providing the divine price for our sins. We see Jesus Christ, the obedient Son of God, in "fathomless condescending love," laying down His life as a ransom for our sins.

What a paradox the cross presents. Mankind stands at the "crossroads of his destiny" at the foot of the cross. To him, it represents either the darkest day in human history or the most glorious. The cross provides the only way for man's reconciliation to God and reveals God's judgment on Christ for man's sins. The cross offers everyone the choice of eternal life or eternal death...forgiveness or judgment...heaven or hell. It stands at the crossroads where man must make a choice. There at the apex of the crossroads is Christ. The most important question man will ever have to face is, "What will I do with Jesus, who is called the Christ, the Son of God?"

Man must answer...and answer he will. To reject Christ in this life is to be at that appointed day in eternity, when he will be among those who will come before the Judgment Seat of God. "For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God" (Romans 14:11-12). Today is the day of grace when Christ can be man's Savior. In eternity, all who have spurned His love will face Him as their judge.

Two malefactors, symbolic of man's sins, also were on crosses beside Christ. One spoke in arrogance and with the sarcastic hardness of unbelief. The other rebuked his companion, confessed his sins, vindicated Christ as Savior and the Son of God, and committed himself to His mercy. At the crossroads...one chose life and eternity with God, the other chose death and eternal separation from God. Salvation is free to all who will come, but infinitely costly to God and His Son. God gave His only Son. The Son gave His life to purchase the only way of eternal life. Jesus said, "I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE: no man cometh unto the Father, BUT BY ME" (John 14:6). What is your choice as you stand at the foot of the cross, the crossroads of your destiny?
