THE WORDS OF THE LORD

"The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth." Psalm 12:6

God's Word reveals again and again the futility of man's wisdom and the frivolous words of his heart. Man speaks from the vanity that possesses him and flatters with a double heart. How blessed are the words of the Lord. God's words come from a heart of love and compassion--pure and righteous-- because they have passed through the furnace of His holiness. They seek to encourage the disheartened, give life to the hopeless, lift the downtrodden and restore the fallen.

Silver with its sterling qualities enriches its owner. It brings lasting beauty to the object it adorns. So the Word of God enriches all who will read and apply its truth and principles. Jeremiah said, "When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty" (Jeremiah 15:16). David said, "O how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long" (Psalm 119:97]. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105).

As we meditate upon God's Word it strengthens the intellect, gives clarity to our judgment, enlarges our vision, purifies our hearts, establishes our faith, quickens our minds, and brings wholeness to our life. Its truth and principles will radically change our life from our sinful self-centered life-style to a life that seeks to live for the glory of God. This is God's work of grace in our life when we yield in utter surrender to His lordship. How life-changing His Word is when we appropriate its promises and make them a reality in our life. His covenant promises to us are inconceivable. Peter said, "He has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires" (2 Peter 1:4).

Sadly many possess the Word and carry it to church, Bible study, and even on occasion read it, but His Word does not possess them. To have a hunger and thirst for God's Word will enable us to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Him. We will begin to see the beauty of all God has done for us, but even more we will begin to see greatness of God and behold His majesty.

The story is told of a young boy who was born blind. As he grew older his mother tried to tell him of the beauty of God's creation. One day they learned of a physician that specialized in eye surgery for the blind. They operated on the young boy and there was much hope that he would be able to see. The day came when the bandages were to be removed from his eyes and the moment of truth would be revealed. His mother and the physician led him to the garden of the hospital and there removed the bandages. He opened his eyes to unbelieving beauty, to the wonder and beauty of God's creation. "Oh mother, why didn't you tell me how beautiful everything is?" Through tears of joy and thankfulness she said, "I tried to tell you, but you could not understand or comprehend it all unless you could see it."

Do your eyes have scales on them that have been formed from not reading and applying God's Word to your heart and life? You are familiar with portions of His Word but you have never feasted upon the blessed truths. Let the Holy Spirit make real His Word to your heart and life. A man may be thoroughly conversant with all the benefits of honey but until he tastes it, he has no idea how wonderful it is. David said, "O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him" (Psalm 34:8).

"Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10]. In the quietness of God's presence meditate upon His Word and let it become food for your soul. Read it slowly, thoughtfully, and meaningfully, and let it penetrate your heart. It will transform your life!
