The Man That Trusts in the Lord

"Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD....Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is." Jeremiah 17:5, 7

Chicago has the world's largest display of original artifacts from the RMS TITANIC. A large, tarnished brass bell is suspended from the ceiling of a dark room. It sets a somber tone and is a striking symbol of the tragedy that took place in the North Atlantic on April 14, 1912. Sadly, the officers of the Titanic ignored the warnings of four ships that were in the icy waters, confident of their ship and their ability to cruise through danger. The Titanic had lifeboats to accommodate only one-third of its passengers. The lack of adequate lifeboats testified to the misconceptions and false security that convinced the leaders that the Titanic was UNSINKABLE.

It is ironic that a cartoon appeared showing the sinking Titanic in the background and a picture of Wall Street. The caption speaks so clearly of the liberal, freewheeling lifestyle of many today. It said, "Even God can't sink this ship!" My immediate reaction was, oh how easily God can bring about the destruction of any security man may devise! How deceived man is to think that billions of dollars secured in investments on Wall Street can avert for a second the mighty hand of God. If your security is not in the infinite grace of God, YOU HAVE NO SECURITY! Fragile, unstable, and fallible are the ways of man. God says, "Cursed is the man that trusts in man."

God said to Israel, "I have set before you, life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him. For the LORD is your life" (Deuteronomy 30:19,20).

God is saying the same today. The choice is yours. Many of our problems and difficulties are the result of our choices. You say, "I didn't choose all these things that have happened to me that have almost taken my life." I say, "God set before you a choice, life or death, blessings or curses. Did you do what God said and choose life? Did you choose to love the Lord, to listen to His voice, to hold fast to Him?" "Well, no, I made my own decision and I chose to go the way I thought best." Then you are now reaping the consequences of "your choice" of turning your back on God and going your own way. The decisions we make determine the direction we take and the consequences we can expect.

A writer once made this striking observation: "Without God, life has no purpose, and without purpose, life has no meaning. Without meaning, life has no significance or hope." Our culture today presses us to such a fast pace that we do not heed God's words, "Be still, and know that I am God." Take time to evaluate your life in the light of eternity, in the light of what God says in His Word. "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12). Jesus said, "I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE. No man cometh unto the Father but by Me" (John 14:6). Is your hope, security, even life itself, found in Christ? He's the ONLY WAY!
