"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich." 2 Corinthians 8:9
What would you say if someone asked you, "What is the grace of God?" I'm sure there are numerous answers, but let me give you one that is simple, yet profound, and all encompassing. Grace is God giving to us that which we do not deserve. You might say, "Well, what does that include?"...EVERYTHING! The only thing we deserve is God's righteous judgment. Only the fathomless grace of God exceeds our devastating sin! This beloved hymn expresses so beautifully God's amazing grace!
Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary's mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt.
Sin and despair like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.
Dark is the stain that we cannot hide,
What can avail to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,
Whiter than snow you may be today.
Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face.
Will you this moment his grace receive?
Grace, grace, God's grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God's grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin.
Only eternity will reveal the magnitude of God's amazing grace. We cannot do anything to gain favor or acceptance with God. We must receive His salvation as a gift of His grace. As long as we think we are sufficient in ourselves, live in the domain of pride and self-independence, God is powerless to do anything for us. It is only as we come "as we are"...in our sin...with a contrite heart, a humble repentant spirit, and accept the grace of God so graciously given by His Son Jesus Christ on the cross, can He impart forgiveness and eternal life to us.
How does the grace of God become effective in our lives? It begins with God. We did not love God...He first loved us and drew us to Himself. Paul experienced God's amazing grace not only in his salvation, but in his life and ministry. Buffeted continually by his enemies, persecuted unmercifully by those who opposed him, stoned, shipwrecked, beaten, left for dead, in hunger and great need time and again, he persevered in faith. God said to Paul, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 8:9).
To us, also, is given God's amazing grace. How blessed it is when we come to the end of our way, our resources, our will, our strength...to find in HIM, the SOURCE OF ALL OUR NEED!
David knew of this amazing grace and cried out in praise and adoration..."Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable." We must stand in awe of God's grace, recognizing were it not for His grace, mercy, and infinite love, we would be without hope and without God. "BUT GOD, demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were yet still sinners, Christ died for us!" (Romans 5:8). GRACE, HOW GLORIOUS!
