Unblamable in Holiness

"To the end he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before God, even our Father." 1 Thessalonians 3:13

"Only the pure in heart will see God." C.S. Lewis said, "Only the pure in heart will want to see God." It is also true that only those who are holy will see God and will want to see Him. Can you think how miserable people would be in heaven if they didn't want to see God? If they have no time or place in their lives for Him here, why would they enjoy being in His presence forever? Heaven is a holy place, inhabited by a holy God, filled with myriads of holy people incessantly praising and adoring their holy God.

Love is the fruit of faith, and holiness is the motive of love. What is holiness? It is the conformity of our heart, will, and life to the revealed will of God. Holiness talks about the "mystery of God." God is awesome in His holiness. When my wife and I traveled through Austria and Switzerland, we were continually lost in the awesome beauty and majestic heights and character of the Alps. In the little village of Zermatt, high in the Alps, we stood in silent wonder, beholding the splendor and greatness of that magnificent mountain, the Matterhorn. I could not help but think how it will be when we stand in the presence of our eternal God. He is awesome in His nature, His mighty power, His holiness, His majesty, and in all His infinite attributes.

God wants us to share His holiness. Paul writes, "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." We are to pursue holiness in our lives. God wants us to be free from the entanglements of selfishness that hold us in bondage. He wants us to be free from the things that bind and restrict us from having an open, receptive heart through which the Holy Spirit can draw us into an intimate relationship with Him.

Holiness is not some kind of unearthly life. It is simply sanctified ordinary living that is governed and controlled by God. It's not being some kind of "super saint" with a halo over our head. It is letting God be the God of our life. We incorporate our faith and commitment into our everyday living. There's nothing unusual about that. When we say our marriage vows, we exchange "single bliss" for the "united bliss" of a married life. We enter into a new relationship that affects every phase of our lives. Adjustments are made so that we may live in harmony and consideration with each other. If our marriage is on the right foundation, we prefer the other to ourselves. We seek to please the one who is the love of our life. The same thing takes place in our spiritual life. We have entered into a relationship with God in which our old life, which has been centered in self, now focuses on the one who has redeemed us and reconciled us to God. He is now the one we seek to please. It is turning around from "all that we are" and making Him the "Lord of all" so we may be all He wants us to be. What greater joy can we have than to live under the blessing of God? It is God's will that we be holy. Paul prays, "He may stablish your hearts unblamable in holiness before God."
