God's Refreshing Spring

"He that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them." Isaiah 49:10

One of the great blessings in life is coming to the Fountain of Living Waters and being refreshed, renewed, and restored by the presence and power of God. I'm sure you can testify to the times in your life when you were weary, burdened down with care, and physically and emotionally weak. When seemingly there was no way out but up, you found those refreshing waters of God that brought peace of heart and soul.

David knew about those waters when, as a shepherd, he often led his sheep over the hills of Palestine. Later, he found those waters a solace of rest and peace, reviving his life from the continual pursuit of his enemies. David said, "He leads me beside the still waters, he restores my soul." As he came to those waters, God said to him, "Be still and know that I am God."

In this quiet time, God brings to our heart a realization of our utter inability to handle our problems in our own strength. In the desert stretches of our spiritual journey, God has His refreshing springs. We see an impregnable rock and cannot imagine that it marks a delightful oasis. We see a flinty place and cannot conceive that it hides a refreshing fountain. It is in the quietness of His presence that He wants us to know, "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than yours."

We will also find resignation of our will to His. He says to us, "Cast all of your care [anxiety, heartache, problems] on me, for I care for you. You cannot handle this need, but I can. Put your trust in me. Let me shoulder the burden; let me be your sufficiency and give deliverance."

When we resign our hearts to His control and our will to His sovereignty, there comes a blessed release from our need. He gives us the assurance that "He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we can ask or even think." His peace that passes human understanding becomes a reality to us.

Then the challenge comes for us to exercise faith in the might of His power. God has given us many wonderful promises of what He wants to do in and through us, and has revealed what He is able to do for us in our many devastating circumstances. But until we appropriate what He has provided, His promises are useless to us. They have been given us to lay hold of by faith, to take possession of, to make our own, that He may make true unto us the resources of His Power. God said, "Call upon me and I will answer you, and I will show you great and mighty things which you know not." Wow! Let me ask you: have you been to the fountain of Living Waters and been refreshed, renewed, and restored? Come to the fountain that never runs dry.

Jesus said, "He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water." Oh that we might say with David, "I will lift up my eyes unto the hills from where my help comes. My help comes from the Lord."
