David's Song of Praise

"And David spoke unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul." 2 Samuel 22:1

David sings words of praise and thanksgiving unto God. This chapter could be one of David's psalms. It explores the numerous encounters David had revealing the might and power of God, faithfully protecting and delivering him from his enemies. But notice, it was sung on the "very day" God delivered him from his enemies! These verses of praise were the song of his heart the rest of his life. I'm reminded of the challenge Moses gave Israel: "And you shall remember all the way the LORD has led you these forty years in the wilderness" (Deuteronomy 8:2). What a solemn charge! God graciously delivers us from heart-rending experiences, protects us from dreadful circumstances we are not even aware of, and intercedes for us time and again. Then it isn't long before we proceed as if nothing happened. HOW SOON WE FORGET! But look a little further in this challenge by Moses and you will find why they were to remember. He said God took them through those dreadful years in the wilderness "to humble you, to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep My commandments or not." REMEMBER ALL THE WAY THE LORD HAS LED US!

David praises the Lord for His hand upon his life! His psalms reflect the "beat of his heart." "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but God delivers him out of them all." David cries out in ceaseless praise to WHAT GOD IS TO HIM: He is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my shield, the horn of my salvation, my high tower, my refuge, and my Savior!

Such praise was born in the "desert plains," in the "cave of Adullam," in the "wilds" when Saul pursued him with vengeance, as a "partridge in the mountains." It was in these times of distress that David learned to lean on God, to trust Him when He could not see His hand leading the way. David found Him an "ever-present help" amidst his most severe times of need. In those days of anguish and oppression, there was born in David a faith that "dared to trust" in the might of God and was strengthened by a steadfast confidence that was unwavering...a trust that grasped the one who is omnipotent! Such faith holds the almighty hand of God, and trusts Him for the improbable, the impossible, the infinite, and the eternal.

"It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect." David was energized and enabled, upheld, and preserved by God. When the task before us seems impossible and the difficulty insurmountable, how blessed it is to be "strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man." David closes this song of praise triumphantly! "The LORD lives! Praise be to the Rock! Exalted be God, the Rock, my Savior! He is the God who avenges me, who subdues nations under me, who saves me from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from violent men you rescued me. Therefore, I will praise you among the nations, oh LORD; I will sing praises to your name. He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever" (Psalm 18:46-50). Oh that we, like David, could sing this song of triumph!
