Be Still and Know

"Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." Psalm 46:10

This verse is a continual challenge to me. How often in my life I have had to stop, come apart, and, in the quietness of the moment, "be still." I am always amazed how all the confusion, pressure, and stress seem to subside. Finally, there is quietness, stillness, and a peace in which I begin to hear His still, small voice.

I am reminded of the eye of a hurricane. When the terrifying winds are swirling counter-clockwise at better that 75 mph, there in the middle of it all is an eerie calm where there is virtually no wind, just a deathly quietness and a settled peace. Yet, on all sides of the eye, the winds are blowing in all their fury!

I think that is what God meant when He said to cease striving, let the stress of life be as it may, come apart and let Him bring a quietness of spirit, a calm settled peace that will defy your understanding. But you must "be still" and let God encompass your whole being.

In that blessed time of being still, He reveals to me who He is in all of His majesty. As I wait upon Him, tenderly and gently He speaks. With a humble spirit and contrite heart, I submit in complete submission to His control. He takes over and begins to assure me of His unconditional love, revealing to me the exceeding riches of His grace, His faithful hand upon my life, and His interceding for me before the Father. His great and precious promises will uphold me, protect me, guide me, and comfort me. He will never let anyone pluck me out of His hand.

On and on He continues, until there is created within me a well of praise, adoration, and worship that transcends all that was on my heart before I became still in His presence. You see, when "I" got out of the way, when "my" frustrated thoughts were put aside and I simply became quiet before Him, He began to let me know "WHO HE IS." I began to realize the greatness, majesty, and sovereignty of God. I realized that I could not begin to comprehend the infinity of God. He is beyond my finite mind, beyond anything I can imagine.

I join in adoration with the psalmist when he writes, "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised [worshiped, adored, stood in awe of]. His greatness is unsearchable [so vast, so deep that no one can fathom it] (Psalm 145:3). In such times, I simply get lost in the infinite magnitude of His majesty and all that it represents. It's beyond me, but that is what He is saying here. If you will "come apart" and be still, then you will come to "KNOW ME" as I reveal myself to you. "Be still and KNOW that I am God!" It is only as we are still, quiet, and apart with Him that we can "know Him" in all His fullness.

I want to spend more time in the "secret place of His tabernacle," because it is there I can meet with Him personally, intimately, and searchingly. There, I will come to "know Him" as in no other way. Nothing to distract, just beholding Him! Letting Him speak to my heart. There is no better place! He draws me to Himself! How blessed!
