This Is the Way... Walk in It

"And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." Isaiah 30:21

In the very beginning of creation, God set forth His terms whereby He would dwell with man. It was on the basis of man honoring God for WHO HE IS. When God established His covenant with His people Israel, the terms were to "obey His commandments and walk in His law." God spoke again and again to Israel, basically saying, "If you obey my voice and walk in my way, I will pour out my blessings upon you." But, "They soon forgot his works; they waited not for his counsel, but lusted exceedingly in the wilderness and tempted God in the desert. And he gave them their request, but sent leanness into their soul" (Psalm 106:13-15). Such are the ways of man, refusing to be subject to the authority of God, insisting on his way and his will, and rejecting God's way of blessing.

Had they simply walked in obedience to God, they would have entered into an intimate relationship with God that would have been beyond their comprehension. They would have experienced the glory of His presence, the might of His power, the companionship of His grace, and the exceeding wonders of His love.

We are faced with a major problem today that affects the whole of our spiritual journey. The average Christian has little, if any, concept of the majesty of God. The right concept of God is essential and basic to our spiritual walk. What would you say if I asked, "WHO IS GOD?" or "WHAT IS GOD LIKE?"

A. W. Tozer, in "The Attributes of God," had these penetrating words to say about the majesty of God: "When we try to imagine what God is like, we must of necessity use 'that which is not like God' as a raw material for our minds to work on. Hence, whatever we visualize God to be, He is not, for we have constructed our image out of that which He has made, and what He has made is not God. If we insist upon trying to imagine God, we end up with an 'idol' made not with hands but with thought. An idol of the mind is as offensive to God as an idol of the hand. God's essential nature is INCOMPREHENSIBLE."

You might say, "What does all of that have to do with me and my spiritual journey?" It has everything to do with it. Our concept of God will determine the depth of our commitment--How great is God? The intimacy of our relationship with God--How much does He deserve our love? The steadfastness of our faith--Is He able to hold us secure in all the encounters of life? The foundation of our faith--Upon what is our spiritual life built? God in His holiness, righteousness, and justice, along with His love, grace, and mercy, must be the point of reference on which our lives must be founded, sustained, and lived. When we recognize the greatness of God, we will realize the encompassing need to humbly bow before Him with a "broken heart and a contrite spirit," even as David did, and stand in awe of ALL HE IS! It is only then that we will hear Him say, "This is the way; walk ye in it." But how glorious!
