Canaan Was All God Said It Was... But

"We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large." Numbers 13:27-28

We often stand on the very brink of God's blessing yet fail miserably to receive it. The people of Israel were led out of bondage in Egypt. All of Canaan was before them: the land God promised to Abraham, the land that flowed with milk and honey. All they had to do was "possess what God had already provided."

Moses calls the most "valiant" man from each tribe to him. He sends these 12 men to spy on the land and bring him a report. Now these were no ordinary men. They were men of proven courage, strength, and valor, the 12 "best men," one from each tribe.

Ten mighty men said, "It is all God said it was, BUT." They saw only the difficulties: the powerful people, giants compared to them; impregnable walled cities; and an unhealthy climate that ate up its inhabitants. They saw everything BUT GOD! Does that sound familiar to us today? They looked within themselves to their own strength. They acknowledged the difficulties, but denied that God was leading them. Everything before them was limited to the boundaries of their self-centered vision. They had lost sight of God, forgotten the promises of God, and had no faith to enter the land God had promised to them. Giant-like men, fortified cities: God would conquer it all for them!

Two humble men of God said, "He will lead us into that land and give it to us. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them." They recognized God had "brought them out of Egypt to bring them into Canaan," the land of promise. The people are mighty, but God is mightier. Their fortifications are strong, but they cannot withstand God. They fight with the arm of the flesh; we fight with the arm of the living God. No matter how numerous and powerful they are, they are only "bread for us." God is with us!

Faith looks to God and leaves out every discouraging circumstance. Faith looks outside of us and dares to trust God for the impossible, that which is beyond our capabilities. Let us go up, "not to conquer" the enemy, but to POSSESS what God has already conquered for us. The battle is over, the victory is ours, the food is prepared for us, and we have only to eat it! Whenever God leads us, He will equip and enable us for the task. However formidable the enemy, God is able to subdue, defeat, and destroy him and be our sufficiency. Sometimes it takes years of struggling before we learn "at the Jordan" what we should have learned "at the Red Sea"--GOD'S FAITHFULNESS and HIS MIGHTY POWER. Neither the wilderness nor Jordan was in God's plan for Israel. I wonder how many alarming circumstances we "create for ourselves" which never were in God's plan for us? God said, "Everywhere the sole of your foot treads upon is yours." Israel only possessed 25 percent of all the land God promised to them, unclaimed through unbelief! Oh that we might "possess our possessions" and appropriate all He has purchased for us!
