THIS IS THE LORD'S DOING

"This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes." Psalm 118:23

We are so taken up with our concerns and interests that we often fail to see the hand of the Lord active in our lives. When we walk in companionship with the Lord we need to be spiritually sensitive to all that we encounter. God graciously intervenes for us in ways that we are not even aware of. He will go before and prepare the way for all that trust Him wholly (Proverbs 3:5-6).

I'm sure you can look back on your life to some unusual circumstance and say, "Only the Lord could have done that!" We realize how merciful God was and are amazed at what has been done. Most of the time we had nothing to do with the miracle of His grace and we exclaim, "This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes."

How blessed to live each day in glorious expectation of seeing God work in our lives in things beyond our ability. Not that we are seeking some miracle but to simply see God's hand leading, protecting, providing, and invading our lives with His presence and power. This is the privilege of every believer but practiced by relatively few. It comes by walking in the conscious reality of His presence and having that intimate relationship with the Lord that involves Him in every phase of our life.

A friend of ours in a foreign country was strongly led of the Lord to travel to a certain city. He said, "But Lord I have no money." "Go anyway," said the Lord. As he stood in line to purchase a ticket, he was thinking what he might say when he got to the ticket counter. Just before the man ahead of him finished getting his ticket, the man behind him said, "Here, take my ticket, I am not going. You may have it." It was to the city God wanted him to go! He stood there in the awesome presence of God and said, "This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes."

When in simple obedience we walk with confident trust in the Lord, we should not be surprised at what God might do. How often we sell ourselves short by not entrusting our lives, our way, our circumstances, our needs, our disappointments, and our "all" into His loving hands. God said, "I will go before you, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches in secret places, that thou may know that I, the Lord, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel" (Isaiah 45:2-3). Wow! What a reassuring promise God makes to each of His own. God is assuring us of His mighty power that is ours because we are "in Christ."

God will not impose Himself on us, nor can we expect the might of His power to be manifested for us when there are hindrances that quench the Spirit. Our lives must be in tune with the Lord, the vessel must be clean and the channel free of all that hinders the flow of the Holy Spirit. Self, with all of its insidious tentacles, must be reckoned dead that we may be clothed with humility; "for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble" (1 Peter 5:5).

May we walk in with our eyes "fixed on Jesus," with a sensitive spirit to the leading of the Holy Spirit. "And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee saying, This is the way walk you in it, when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left" (Isaiah 30:21).

We will exclaim with the psalmist..."This is the LORD's doing: it is marvelous in our eyes."
