Knowing Him as Lord

"That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection." Philippians 3:10

To know Christ in an intimate way is to make the transition from saving faith in Christ as my Savior, and entering into a life of obedience and commitment in knowing Christ as Lord. He is not everybody's Lord, "a Lord," or as many nominal Christians and unbelievers refer to Him, "the good Lord." When we submit to His authority and commit to His sovereignty, He will transmit His life and His lordship to us. Then, we will know Him as MY LORD.

Faith in His working, and obedience to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, will translate intellectual truth into applied truth for our daily walk. We get to know Him as Lord when we dare to trust Him in the whole of our lives. Many Christians never know of His faithfulness, because they never put themselves in a position of solely depending on Him. How great is the deepening of our faith and the joy of His presence, when we recklessly abandon ourselves in complete trust to Him for every need in our life.

Others never experience the might of His power, because their lives are controlled by their own self-sufficiency, lived independently of God's involvement in their lives. They know not the supernatural power of God, because they live within the boundaries of their own making, in the arena of their finite vision and natural resources. They survive in a sub-culture spiritual existence, living on the perimeter of God's working rather than in the center where all the action is. They never know the exhilaration of triumph or experience the faithfulness and power of God being manifested in their lives.

Well do I know my own sinfulness, but I also know the virtue of His cleansing blood. I know my weakness, but I also know the all-sufficiency of His grace to be my strength and power. I know the treachery of my own deceitful heart, but I also know how sure His promise is, "He which began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6). I know the enemy seeks to discourage, defeat, and destroy my every effort, but I also know His promise, "Who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him" (2 Corinthians 2:14). I know the limitations of my finite resources, but I also know the boundless resources of His grace. I know it is not I, but His life that lives in me, that enables me to be triumphant and victorious in the trials of life!

To live the blessing of His lordship is for Him to possess the whole of our being. It is not a question of our possessing Him, but of Him possessing us. He must have the liberty and freedom to manifest His life through us if we are to know Him as the Lord of our life. Under His lordship, He stretches our boundaries, focuses our vision, sets aright our priorities, and infuses our lives with His sufficiency. May this be the desire of our heart and the goal of our life! Oh that He might fill the whole of our personality in the power of the Holy Spirit with the adequacy of Christ! Then we will KNOW HIM AS LORD OF ALL and will experience His life living in and through us!
